He stood at the corner of Commercial and Pearl, looked up and down the street. A few early bird cruise ship passengers were doing the same, holding maps in front of them. Brandon waited, saw Katâs black Jeep approach. She pulled up like an Uber driver and he got in. Kat was in yoga pants, running shoes, a T-shirt that said Team Glock.
âIâd say coffee but maybe not,â Kat said.
âLow profile,â Brandon said.
âI like your preppy slacker disguise.â
âThanks. Should I have worn a suit and tie?â
âNo,â Kat said. âItâs not like youâre going to court.â
He looked at her.
âMuch,â she said.
She drove down Commercial, swung up onto the Eastern Prom. They passed Munjoy Street, and Brandon pictured Mia, making coffee, cleaning the apartment. That made him think of her father and he said, âThink I should have my own lawyer there?â
âCarew will be there for you. So not yet. Not for this.â
âSoon?â
âOh, yeah.â
âI could lose the boat,â Brandon said.
âWe can only hope,â Kat said. She looked at him and smiled.
They parked by the ramp, looked out. The boats were all pointing southeast, into the wind. A couple was struggling to keep their kayaks from being blown around. The trip out of the harbor was going to be rougher.
âSo here we are,â Brandon said.
âYouâll be fine. Just tell the truth. The whole truth.â
âI always do,â Brandon said. âThe one thing my grandmother taught me that stuck. That and how to make her a Manhattan.â
âI thought she drank wine,â Kat said.
âOnly before five. A couple of stiff Manhattans for the big finish.â
âYou miss her?â
âIâm glad sheâs missing all of this,â Brandon said.
âSheâd be on your team. Speaking of which...â
Brandon watched the kayakers. The guy was fifty feet ahead of the woman, who was still struggling.
âThe mayor.â
âUh-huh.â
âI heard she wants Garcia to come down on you hard on the body cam.â
âBody cam doesnât change the shoot,â Brandon said.
âHalsey pushed for the things. You didnât use it. Itâs like you were dissing her.â
âI forgot.â
âI know.â
They sat. The guy in the kayak had turned back, almost flipped coming around. Brandon didnât feel like saving him, leave it to Kat the triathloner. He didnât feel like saving anyone. He was done.
âThereâs a lot of pressure on her. That comes down on Garcia.â
âI know. You should see my phone. Estusa put my cell number online.â
âThat little weasel.â
âYup.â
âYou know itâs got very little to do with you and Rawlings,â Kat said. âItâs like youâre the scapegoat for all of the shootings all over the country.â
âTiming is everything,â Brandon said.
âPlus the failure to report the Shakespeare thing.â
âI know.â
âLay it all out there. You had good intentions. Youâre a good cop.â
âWhatâs the line? When bad things happen to good people?â
âA reprimand, maybe. Thirty days suspension,â Kat said.
âWhat happens to the bad cops?â Brandon said.
âLike Dever, always the last one in? Three guys pounding you and itâs âWhereâs Dever?â He was just here? That coward. People like him, they skate. Until they donât.â
The kayakers were both running past the boat ramp, the wind blowing them upriver toward Back Bay.
